Tapple Rules
A fast category word game where players name answers beginning with unused letters before the timer runs out.
Also known as: Tapple word game, category timer word game
Tapple-style play turns the alphabet into a shrinking resource. Common letters disappear quickly, so players need both fast recall and a plan for harder starters.
The Animals wheel example uses Bear, Otter, Lizard, and Cat to show pressed letters without copying the official device. The mechanic is category answer first, starting-letter button second.
Quick answer
Tapple is a timed category-letter game. Name a valid answer for the category, mark its starting letter as used, and keep going before the timer knocks you out.

What you need
- A circular alphabet timer or generic letter tracker.
- Category cards.
- Players ready to answer quickly.
Setup
- Choose a category card.
- Reset the alphabet tracker.
- Start the timer for the first player.
- Players take turns giving answers and pressing or marking starting letters.
Objective
Stay in the round by naming a valid category answer that starts with an unused letter, then marking that letter as used.
Rules
- Each answer must fit the active category.
- The answer's starting letter must still be available.
- After a valid answer, that starting letter is marked used.
- A player who cannot answer before time runs out is eliminated or loses the round under the chosen rules.
- The last remaining player or team wins the category.
Scoring and results
- Casual games often score by round wins.
- Tournament or classroom formats may award points for surviving each category.
- Fast, valid answers matter more than unusual vocabulary unless common letters are gone.
Examples
Animals category
With category `Animals`, players might use `Bear` for B, `Otter` for O, and `Lizard` for L, leaving those letters unavailable.
Strategy tips
- Use difficult letters early if you know a safe answer.
- Keep several backup answers for the same category in mind.
- Listen carefully so you do not repeat a used letter.
- Choose clear answers that the table will not challenge.
- When common letters disappear, shift to less obvious starters quickly.
Common mistakes
- Giving a valid answer but starting with a letter that has already been used.
- Freezing on a perfect answer instead of saying a safe one.
- Choosing an answer that sparks a challenge while the timer pressure is high.
History and background
Timed category games are easy to teach because every turn combines a category, a starting letter, and a ticking clock. Tapple-style play makes the alphabet itself the shared resource.
This guide uses a generic circular category tracker. It does not copy the official physical device, button layout, logo, cards, or packaging.
Variations
- Team category rounds.
- No-elimination scoring.
- Custom classroom category decks.
